Shopify review for freelancers building an online store

An independent, affiliate-supported assessment by SoloOps Stack. This is a review of official documentation, not a report from a store we have operated or a hands-on test.

The short version

Shopify is worth considering if the shop itself is the centre of your project. Its official description covers an online storefront, product and inventory management, payments, orders and shipping, with commerce hosting included. S1

Our editorial view: that makes it a sensible shortlist candidate for a freelancer building a dedicated product shop. It is less compelling if you only need one simple offer page or primarily want to deliver a course. Start with the buying experience you need, not the length of the feature list.

SoloOps Stack is not Shopify. We do not provide Shopify account support, and this review is not an official Shopify recommendation.

What we checked

We reviewed the official US and UK pricing pages, including their comparison tables and FAQs, plus Shopify's dated explanation of Plus pricing. All were accessed on 2026-11-06. Sources and freshness notes appear at the end. S1 S2 S3

Our criteria are storefront needs, solo-operator responsibilities, the published plan limits and the full cost questions you should answer before subscribing. We have not measured speed, support response times, usability or commercial results.

Plan overview: US and UK prices are different

These are standard published subscription figures, not introductory offers. The annual column is a monthly equivalent under yearly billing, not a month-to-month subscription. US figures are USD; UK figures are GBP as displayed on the UK page, not converted from dollars. S1 S2

Main online-store plan US: paid monthly US: monthly equivalent, paid yearly UK: paid monthly UK: monthly equivalent, paid yearly
Basic US$39 US$29 £25 GBP £19 GBP
Grow US$105 US$79 £65 GBP £49 GBP
Advanced US$399 US$299 £344 GBP £259 GBP

Shopify also lists Plus. Its dated explanation puts the USD starting price at US$2,300 per month on a three-year term; more complex arrangements can have different pricing. The UK pricing page separately displays a starting figure of £1,800 GBP per month. Confirm the applicable quote and contract; Plus is not presented here as a flexible monthly alternative. S3 S2

This is an overview of the main online-store plans, not an exhaustive list of every specialised Shopify offering. Check applicable taxes and any other charges in the vendor's final quote.

What changes between plans?

Shopify describes Basic as its solo-entrepreneur option. Grow lists up to 5 additional staff accounts, while Advanced lists up to 15. The comparison table describes checkout customisation as limited on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and full on Plus. S1

For a solo business, our recommendation is to justify an upgrade with a specific requirement. Do not buy more staff capacity simply because it appears in the next tier.

Pros: reasons to put Shopify on your shortlist

  • Hosting is included. Shopify's FAQ says commerce hosting, unlimited bandwidth and a free TLS/SSL certificate are included. That removes a separate hosting purchase from this particular setup. S1
  • The core workflow is shop-focused. The official description covers the storefront, products, inventory, orders and shipping in one commerce platform. This is the main reason we would investigate it for a dedicated product shop. S1
  • A domain you already own can be connected. Shopify's FAQ confirms that you can use an existing domain. Domain ownership is not the same as receiving a new paid domain for free. S1
  • There is room for staff access when it is needed. Grow and Advanced publish the additional account allowances noted above. Whether those allowances justify the price is a separate decision. S1

Cons and tradeoffs to consider

The subscription is not your complete store budget

Shopify distinguishes card-processing costs from third-party transaction fees. On the US Basic plan, its published standard online card rate starts at 2.9% + US$0.30, and its third-party transaction-fee table lists 2%. The UK Basic page lists 2% + £0.25 GBP for standard online cards and a 2% third-party transaction fee. Different payment methods and circumstances can have different rates. S1 S2

These are different fee categories, not a single universal all-in charge. Shopify says third-party transaction fees may apply when you use a third-party provider instead of Shopify Payments. Check the exact method, region and plan that apply to you. S1 S2

Checkout control has plan boundaries

The published comparison distinguishes limited checkout customisation on the three standard plans from full customisation on Plus. If a particular checkout change is essential, verify that exact change before choosing a plan. S1

A platform does not do the business planning for you

Our advice: plan product descriptions, delivery, returns, customer enquiries and any extra software before subscribing. The fact that a platform includes a tool does not establish that it fits your process.

Who it may suit

Consider Shopify if you want a dedicated store and the documented product, order and inventory workflow matches your requirements. The included hosting may also appeal if you do not want to select a separate host. Those are fit judgements based on the published scope, not test results. S1

Who should compare alternatives first

Compare first if your main offer is a course or a small funnel-led campaign, if you want a self-hosted WordPress route, or if your required checkout changes are unclear. Read the freelancer platform roundup or the Shopify vs Systeme.io comparison for different starting points.

A useful next step

List your must-have checkout, delivery and payment requirements. Then compare them with the vendor's current plan details before paying.
